Longfield Gardens Bulb Review and Fall Planting Tips

"Flowers make life more beautiful. They provide a sea of color in the yard and fresh cut flowers to decorate every room of the house. Starting a garden for the first time can be a daunting task. Fortunately, bulbs are an easy and economical way to ensure flowers this coming spring—and provide a fool-proof way to jump-start gardens." - Longfield Gardens

This was my first year planting bulbs for spring flowers so I was a bit intimidated and in need of advice. I am very excited to work with Longfield Gardens who gave us 100 Muscari Armeniacum (Grape Hyacinths) bulbs and 4 packs of Tulips varieties that we selected: Flaming Purissima, Striped Apeldoorn, Moulin Rouge and Shirley Tulips.

Some bulb planting tips:

When to plant:
Research the best time of the year to plant by referencing this map before ordering your bulbs.

Dark Purple areas should plant bulbs in October-December, medium purple should plant September-November, and finally, light purple areas should plant September-October.

How to plant:

I followed the 3 simple steps on Longfield Garden's website:

1. Dig a hole 3-4 times deep as the bulb height.
2. Set bulbs firmly in place, following spacing guidelines.
3. Cover with soil and water thoroughly.

Another tip from the website:
Remember when planting bulbs, avoid the temptation to plant them in single rows. For the most natural look, clump them in a pyramid, rectangle, or circular shape.

I am so excited to see what my gorgeous flowers look like this spring (I planted 200 bulbs total) and I will make sure to follow up with you all so you can see my gorgeous tulips! Thank you to Longfield Gardens for such a wonderful opportunity to work with them and get my feet wet when it comes to planting! The wealth of planting information on their website is phenomenal and I will be referring back to it again for my planting needs!

Order bulbs now for the fall-planting season and make sure to share with me what you ordered! In the meantime - click on the varieties above that I ordered and tell me which one is your favorite!
