Blue Apron Meals Review and Giveaway

“The featured product was provided free of charge to facilitate my review, but all opinions are 100% the opinion of the Coupon Savvy Sarah family.”

Being a busy family always on the go, I am finding it more difficult to budget my time with grocery shopping and meal planning between working full-time, karate and more! Thankfully my husband brought the meal delivery service Blue Apron to my attention and I decided to check them out for myself!

How Blue Apron Works:

  • Pick the plan and number of people.  You can define any dietary preferences/restrictions.
  • Food is delivered in a refrigerated box so that it stays fresh on it’s way to you or if it gets stuck outside because you aren’t home yet which was perfect for me since I work outside of the home!
  • You can skip weeks if you need to!
  • If you are a loyal customer you get additional goodies in the mail and earn free meals to give to friends!

The Meals:

  • You are provided with all the ingredients you need in the proper proportions along with easy to read recipe cards.
  • Blue Apron assumes you have salt, pepper and olive oil at home to use.
  • The meals should take you about 35 minutes on average to prepare.
  • Meals are 500-700 calories per serving.
  • It is suggested to cook fish and seafood first.

The Cost:

  • Starting at $9.99 per person per meal (FREE shipping)
  • Minimum order must be 3 meals a week for 2 people (ends up being $59.94 for 2 people).
  • You have the option of 2, 4 or 6 people.
  • There is no commitment.  You can cancel anytime before weekly cutoff day.
Our Blue Apron package came in the nick of time! I love that I was able to track my package through the FedEx link that Blue Apron sent me and we ended up making our first meal the night we received the box since we knew it was coming! I also love that I knew what meals were coming to us! The package was very insulated and ingredients were very cold when they arrived.

All the ingredients are clearly labeled and individually packaged - you just need to pair up the ingredients with the specific recipes which are clearly marked on the brightly colored recipe cards. The recipe cards showed great photos of the different steps to take which is great for those who might not be as experienced in the kitchen as others or if it is a dish they aren't familiar with.

We received the meal ingredients and recipe cards for 5-Spice Pork Buns with Red Cabbage, Carrot & Thai Basil Salad, Chicken and Mixed Mushroom Forager with Toasted Parmesan-Garlic Bread and Asparagus & Spring Onion Tart with Arugula & Mache Salad.

We prepared the Chicken and Mixed Mushroom Forager for our first meal. I love the clear recipe cards with the photos and easy to follow instructions. The chicken we received for the meal however seemed to be a smaller portion than what was shown on our recipe card and it wasn't butterflied as expected. I ended up cutting the chicken into chunks to help spread it further in the recipe. I didn't make any additional changes and the dish turned out delicious. I made Rose something separate to eat because I didn't think she would like the wild mushrooms but she surprised me by trying the dish and loved it.....especially the two different wild mushrooms that we hadn't tried before!

The other two meals - the 5-Spice Pork Buns and the Asparagus & Spring Onion Tart were just as delicious. I have never prepared the pork dish or used Chinese steam buns so it was a nice treat to have all the ingredients on hand and already measured out! Again in regards to the portion of meat we received versus the actual photos of the quantity of meat on the recipe cards - I felt it didn't accurately reflect what we received. The quality of the ingredients though are top quality and the dishes are full of flavor and easy to prepare! As far as cost ($9.99 per person, per meal), Blue Apron is pretty reasonable.  It’s probably slightly more than if you were to do your own grocery shopping, but definitely less than a restaurant meal!
