The featured product was provided free of charge to facilitate my review, but all opinions are 100% the opinion of the Coupon Savvy Sarah family.”

Today is the official release day of Cardinal by Michigan author Sara Mack. I have read all of Sara Mack's book including her Guardian Trilogy and Sparrow. Cardinal is a standalone, contemporary romance for ages 17+ and is actually spin-off of Sparrow; however, the books do not need to be read in order (you will just find some of the characters in both books).

Cardinal Synopsis:

Jen Elliott’s world is falling apart.

Her boyfriend is married (not to her), the restaurant she works for sells out to a chain (she’s unemployed), and her apartment building catches fire (thankfully, she didn’t start it). Faced with a job search and living with her parents, a phone call from her brother changes everything.

“Come out here, Little J. Escape for a while.”

Convinced to do just that, Jen finds herself on her brother’s doorstep in Chicago. Armed with her guitar and a bruised heart, she plans to work on her music and contemplate her future. What she doesn’t expect is to fall for the sexy, tattooed neighbor upstairs. From the moment Latson appears uninvited in her bedroom, the two can’t help but wage a battle of sarcasm and wit.

Until the attraction becomes impossible to ignore.

Hopeful the universe is finally playing fair, Jen gives in to her feelings. She should know, however, that when it rains, it pours. When offered the unexpected chance of a lifetime, she decides to pursue her passion. Unfortunately, her dreams are tied to Latson’s painful past. As time goes on and their distance grows, Jen fears fate conspired to bring them together only to tear them apart.

Cardinal is the story of losing everything you have to find everything you need.

Our Thoughts:

First off - Sara Mack is an amazing author and a wonderful person if you have the pleasure of meeting her in person (yes, I have stalked her a few times to get my books signed....And you might just find my name in the acknowledgements - just sayin'!).  I love how Cardinal spins-off of Sparrow but you can read the two books independently - brilliant! Taking a character (Jen) who was a small part in Sparrow and bringing her to life in Cardinal with her own story was wonderful. I can relate to Jen with her world being completely turned upside down and trying to figure out where to go from there. Latson's character is swoon-worthy as not only the tattooed rocker, but the father-figure to young Oliver. Flaws and all, you can't help but root for Latson and Jen to be together - no matter the obstacles. All the characters mesh well in this book including Jen's brother Pete, who invited her to stay with him when everything fell apart, and his girlfriend (another stand-alone spin-off perhaps?). Trying not to give too many spoilers - but Cardinal is a book that has an easy flow, will make you grin, snicker, perhaps shed a tear or two, and fill you will hope for a happily ever after! Hint for lower Michigan Natives - recognize the venue in the Epilogue? I grew up 10 minutes from there!

About Author Sara Mack:

Sara Mack is a Michigan native who grew up with her nose in books. She is a wife and a hockey mom on top of being trapped in an office forty hours a week. Her spare time is spent one-clicking on Amazon and devouring books on her Kindle, cleaning up after her kids and two elderly cats, attempting to keep her flower garden alive, and, of course, writing. She has an unnatural affinity for dark chocolate, iced tea, and bacon.
