My family and I love to try out new restaurants as a special treat - whether it is date night with my husband or all three of us are having a family date. We often drive almost an hour away to try out new restaurants that aren't available locally in our big city.
I was thrilled to get an invitation for my family and I to check out Granite City Food & Brewery in Northville, Michigan the weekend before it opened to the public. I checked out the menu online and it looked fantastic, plus I love the fact that they brew some of their own beers that they serve on tap. My husband is from Germany and Germans are very serious about their beer (I am still learning about beers)!
Granite City Food & Brewery owns and operates 33 restaurants across 13
states, including convenient metro Detroit locations in Troy, Northville (which opened 4/8) and a new location in Detroit at the Renaissance Center (opening date to be announced). The Northville location is located at the southwest corner of Seven Mile Rd and Haggerty (39603 Traditions Dr - use the intersection cross-streets and not the address to navigate to this location due to the GPS systems not having this newer street in the database) - there are entrances available from both Seven Mile and Haggerty.

Granite City Food & Brewery serves a variety of seasonal
and signature brews. The signature collection available at the restaurant’s 33
locations includes:
- Broad Axe Stout – Style: Oatmeal Stout, a thick creamy head sits atop the opaque blackness of this oatmeal stout. Roasted chocolate and coffee notes make this beer a great treat!
- The Bennie – Style: German Bock, a German style lager, their bock carries a brownish color, a medium body, and a mouthwatering smoothness from the wonderful malt and sweet caramel flavors.
- The Duke – Style: India Pale Ale, the rich color of this pale ale hints at the bold malt character used to balance the huge hoppy flavors and defining bitterness of this classic English beer.
- The Northern – Style: American Lager, brewed to the American standard of a classic lager, this light golden beer is their mildest offering with a creamy, smooth taste.
- Batch 1000 - This is a limited edition Double India Pale Ale with citrus notes and hints of pine.
- Growlers are available for purchase of your favorite beer at GCFB. $30 for the initial purchase (Growler and 64 oz. of beer) and $15 for each refill when you bring your Growler back to GCFB.
My husband chose the Top Sirloin which was served with mashed potatoes and green beans. The steak was cooked perfectly and the seasonings were delicious. The sides were delicious but I wanted to note that the green beans had sliced almonds in them which wasn't stated on the menu (if you have food allergies, I would make sure to inquire in advance about what your dish contains).
I tried the BTA sandwich made with crispy bacon, tomato, creamy avocado slices topped with Havarti and Cheddar cheeses and served on a toasted multi-grain bread and a side of French fries.
Rose chose the pasta dish, Shrimp Diavolo, which is one of the exclusive Northville menu items. The Shrimp Diavolo has tender sauteed shrimp, fresh mushrooms, spinach, tossed with a spicy tomato cream sauce and served over penne pasta. I was concerned this dish might be too spicy for Rose but it was the perfect combination of a creamy sauce with a little heat to it.
Even though we were all stuffed and pleasantly so, our daughter couldn't say no when she heard there was a chocolate cake on the menu (Rose says she has a separate stomach for chocolate - even when she is full). Our fantastic server Sheryl brought us the Chocolate Cake. This is no ordinary Chocolate Cake.....this is dreamy, creamy, decadent bliss on a plate! This dessert is a rich chocolate cake layered with smooth chocolate mousse, topped with chocolate ganache and served with a warm whiskey butter. It truly was the perfect ending to our meal.
