I am so excited to say that Marvel Studios’ GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 is now playing in theaters everywhere! We attended an advance screening of the movie this week and we loved it! My husband, daughter and I are huge Guardians fans and I have to say, Vol. 2 surpassed the original, which is rare for a sequel! This is the funniest film of the year and the perfect way to start off the summer movie-going season!
With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, you are guaranteed to laugh right off the bat once the opening scene finishes - the character Drax steals the show in the way of humor this time around with Groot and Rocket providing comic relief as well. I love seeing how these characters have grown into a family in this sequel. This movie will also give you the feels and possibly cause you to shed a few tears more than once.
And that soundtrack! Again, my family and I are huge fans of the GOTG Awesome Mix Vol. One soundtrack from the first movie - the music fit the scenes perfectly. In the Awesome Mix Vol. Two soundtrack, it's a great mix of songs, but it's not until you hear the music paired with the story line and specific scenes and listen to the words - WOW! The music certainly reflects the story. I highly recommend getting the Awesome Mix Vol One and Vol Two soundtracks if you are a fan of these movies!
We typically don't tend to splurge on seeing movies in 3D, but this is one movie I am happy we did experience in 3D! The visual effects from the scenery, vibrant colors, fast moving action shots (at one point our daughter Rose commented that it felt like she was on a ride!) and more - it is certainly worth seeing in 3D.
Check out the trailer here:
As you can see in the trailer, we finally find out who Peter's father is and how his parents came together, but also be sure to keep an eye out for other familiar faces popping up in the movie! The movie carries a PG-13 rating which is very accurate because there is a lot more cursing in this movie than the original and a few sexual references. I took Rose (14) and she loved the movie and laughed really hard right along side of me. I cannot wait to take my husband this weekend to see it again and see what I might have missed the first time around.
I cannot stress this enough BUT please stick around until all the credits roll through. Marvel fans do not leave before the end credit scenes and there are FIVE of them. One of the scenes made me look at my daughter with a "mom look" because I swear it's something I say to her repeatedly....you will love the scenes at the end!

In celebration of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 opening, I wanted to share a featurette of Chris Pratt talking about his favorite prop on set (spoiler alert, it’s not a blaster!):

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” opens in theaters May 5th and is filled with great action, humor and performances, but it is also infused with a new mixed tape and soundtrack, a dynamic that resonated deeply with audiences in the first film as evidenced by the success of the soundtrack album. The Grammy®-nominated “Guardians of the Galaxy” soundtrack reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, becoming the first soundtrack album consisting entirely of previously released songs to top the chart. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: Awesome Mix Vol. 2 is a collection of 14 songs and once again, music plays an important role in the telling of the story. In an exclusive interview for Rolling Stone Magazine, director James Gunn provides commentary for each track on the album.
Director James Gunn explains, “We had Awesome Mix Volume 1 last time, and this time we have Awesome Mix Volume 2. It was so important that it’s actually part of the film’s title this time around. As most people know, Quill’s mom made the first tape for a slightly younger boy, and she made the second tape for a slightly older boy. So, in many ways the songs reflect the story.”
Continuing, he adds, “The songs are a little bit deeper in some ways; a little bit less pop in some ways. Some of the choices are a bit more eclectic; some of the choices are a bit more popular. But we have a real amazing group of songs that, like in the first movie, I wrote into the script. They are a part of the storytelling. Each song is very specific to the scene where it’s placed.”
On the importance of the score in the film, which often gets overlooked in a film heavy with popular songs, James Gunn adds, “The one thing that is underappreciated is how important Tyler Bates’ score is to the first film,” says the director. “We still use the score from the first movie while shooting this film and it doesn’t get the respect it deserves because it gets so overshadowed by the soundtrack. There’s some beautiful score on that first soundtrack, and I know that the music we’ve written for the second film is even better than what we did for the first film. Tyler Bates has absolutely outdone himself, and we’re giving something very special to people with the music in this film, both the pop songs and the actual score.”

Our Thoughts:
We loved the soundtrack to the first movie so I was excited to check this one out! It definitely follows in what Director James Gunn was saying about this tape being made for Peter at a more mature age. We loved the songs and I am really excited to see how it pairs with parts in the movie when we get to see a sneak peek next week! I definitely recommend checking it out on Amazon (you can listen to samples of the music to see what you think) and I most definitely would tell you to buy the Awesome Mix Vol. One - AMAZING!
